The Impact of AI on Small Business Management and Start-up Development in Nigeria
Published: 2026-06-20
The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has
significantly transformed the global business landscape, creating new
opportunities for innovation, productivity, and entrepreneurial growth. In
Nigeria, small businesses and start-up enterprises constitute a major component
of economic development, employment generation, and poverty reduction. This
paper examines the impact of AI on small business management and start-up
development in Nigeria. The study explores how AI technologies such as
automated accounting systems, customer relationship management tools,
predictive analytics, digital marketing algorithms, and intelligent financial
platforms are improving operational efficiency, enhancing customer engagement,
and supporting strategic decision-making among entrepreneurs. The paper further
discusses the role of AI in expanding access to microfinance, market
intelligence, and digital entrepreneurship opportunities. Despite these
advantages, several challenges hinder effective AI adoption in Nigeria,
including poor digital infrastructure, inadequate technical skills,
cybersecurity concerns, high implementation costs, and limited policy support.
Using recent scholarly literature and contemporary examples from the Nigerian
business environment, the paper analyses the implications of AI-driven
entrepreneurship for sustainable economic growth. The paper concludes that AI
possesses enormous potential to transform Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
if supported by adequate digital literacy programs, infrastructural
development, and enabling government policies. Recommendations are provided for
policymakers, educational institutions, business owners, and technology
stakeholders to encourage wider AI integration among small businesses and
start-ups in Nigeria.
