Artificial Intelligence in Education: Enhancing Teaching, Learning, And Equity Through Intelligent Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping education in the 21st century by transforming how teaching and learning is designed, delivered, and evaluated. This paper examines the evolving role of AI in enhancing instructional quality, learner engagement, and educational equity within the Nigerian context, with specific attention to the opportunities and structural challenges associated with AI integration in northern Nigerian institutions. Drawing on a qualitative review of literature published between 2019 and 2025, the paper analyses how intelligent systems — including adaptive learning platforms, virtual tutors, and data-driven assessment tools — can personalise instruction, support teacher effectiveness, and promote inclusive education for learners with diverse needs. It further interrogates persistent barriers to AI adoption, encompassing inadequate digital infrastructure, limited teacher capacity, data privacy concerns, and the absence of coherent regulatory frameworks. The paper concludes that while AI presents significant potential for improving educational quality and equity in Nigeria, its sustainable impact depends on ethical governance, deliberate curriculum integration, continuous teacher training, and policies that foreground human-centred learning. A balanced partnership between human intelligence and artificial intelligence is identified as the optimal model for sustainable educational transformation.
